Ghost Houses of Lamma Island

← Back to the Portfolio

Tim Gomersall made a short film about the abandoned homes on Lamma Island, Hong Kong. The exodus of property is a common phenomenon within the archipelago of islands, and sometimes it could be whole villages or even islands that were suddenly deserted. Theories are abound, but the most alluring are the ones that talk of hauntings taking place and the occupants fleeing overnight. Personal belongings are often left behind in the flux of the exit, and certain items appear to be left in common ritualistic displays, such as mattresses left in the bath tubs (to cleanse the spirits of the house, perhaps?). The intention was to explore not just the macabre experience of witnessing these abodes, but also how the local flora and fauna has reclaimed the land that they were built upon.
